Levine started Family Dollar in 1959 with the opening of its first store on Charlotte’s Central Avenue. 

The retail chain has grown to include over 8,000 stores across the United States, and people remember Levine for his significant contributions to advancing medical resources in the Charlotte area.

Levine was the biggest individual donor to the Atrium Health Foundation, and his philanthropic efforts began in 1987 when he pledged his support to the Children’s Medical Network. 

Throughout the years, Levine continued to show his support for pediatric health in the area, and in 2003, he donated $10 million to establish the Levine Children’s Hospital.
